Matthew J. Stark is an associate in the Knoxville office of Merchant & Gould, and currently practices in the areas of litigation and patent and trademark prosecution. Before joining Merchant & Gould, Mr. Stark worked in these same practice areas as a patent attorney for a small intellectual property firm in Knoxville. Before moving to Tennessee, Mr. Stark was an associate attorney for a small general practice law firm in Bay City, Michigan, where his practice focused on general litigation and transactional matters in the areas of construction, municipal, education and bankruptcy.

Mr. Stark graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 1997, and a Masters of Architecture in 2003. Prior to going to law school Mr. Stark worked as an architect in Brighton, Michigan. He graduated from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan in January of 2006, earning a Doctor of Juris Prudence degree, Magna Cum Laude.

Mr. Stark was admitted to the Tennessee State bar in 2011 and the Michigan State bar in 2006. He was registered in the United States Patent and Trademark Office in September of 2008. He is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Lawyers Association.
