Merchant & Gould Expands Its Team; Six Join Firm
Intellectual Property Law Firm Adds Five New Attorneys, One Technical Advisor

MINNEAPOLIS, October 8, 2008 - Merchant & Gould, an intellectual property law firm, announced that it has added five new attorneys and one technical advisor for positions in its Minneapolis, Denver, Atlanta and Seattle offices. The new attorneys bring a wealth of expertise to the firm, including mechanical and software design engineering, chemistry, biochemistry and biology.

Caroline G. Burd
Caroline G. Burd joins the Atlanta office as a technical advisor. She holds a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Miami and Ph.D. in organic and polymer chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Ms. Burd is currently a visiting professor at Oxford College of Emory University and recently was a technical advisor with the Pabst Patent Group, LLP.

Ryan J. Fletcher, Ph.D.
Ryan J. Fletcher, Ph.D. joins the Denver office as an associate. Mr. Fletcher is a graduate of the University of Denver Sturn College of Law and received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver. He also conducted graduate research at UCHSC from 1999-2005. Mr. Fletcher received his B.S. in biochemistry from the State University of New York.

Brian Haslam
Brian Haslam joins the Seattle office as an associate. He received his J.D. from Seattle University and was most recently an extern with Judge Zilly of the United States District Court. Mr. Haslam was also a patent agent within the Legal and Corporate Affairs Department at Microsoft Corporation where he also held various software design engineer positions. He holds of Masters of Software Engineering from Seattle University, a Masters of Science and Engineering from Princeton, and B.S. in engineering from the
University of London.

Patrick Johnson
Patrick Johnson joins the Minneapolis office as an associate. He received his J.D. from the William Mitchell College of Law. Prior to receiving his J.D., Mr. Johnson was a mechanical engineer with Karges-Faulconbridge, Inc. and Wold Architects and Engineers in St. Paul. He holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Tulsa and participated in the General Engineering Studies and Cooperative Education Program at Oklahoma State University.

Laura M. Konkel
Laura M. Konkel joins the Minneapolis office as an associate. She received her J.D. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and also holds a Post-Baccalaureate Paralegal Certificate from the Minnesota Paralegal Institute. Ms. Konkel was also a law clerk with Arnold &Porter, LLLP in Washington D.C. and earned her B.A. in history from the University of Minnesota.

Kathleen E. Ott
Kathleen E. Ott joins the Denver office as an associate. Ms. Ott received her J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. She received the Scholastic Excellence Award in both Lawyering Process I and Property. She received her B.A. in molecular, cellular and developmental biology from the University of Colorado.
