As Merchant & Gould's Managing Director, CEO, and Chairman of the Board, Brian oversees the firm's strategic growth and day to day operations. He has extensive experience in law firm leadership, having served on Merchant & Gould's executive, compensation, retirement benefits, and technology committees, as well as Chair of the Electrical practice group.
Brian centers the firm's branding and direction on one key word: excellence. Under his leadership, Merchant & Gould is focused on providing clients with full spectrum intellectual property legal services that span a variety of industries and technologies. He and firm leadership have positioned Merchant & Gould in coast-to-coast locations with a global presence, recruiting talented attorneys and key employees with an uncompromising commitment to integrity, value, and a deep technical and legal experience.
In his practice, Brian is a trusted adviser in the intellectual property arena with more than twenty years' experience counseling clients on matters relating to software, e-commerce, computer hardware, digital circuit design, and traditional electrical and mechanical technologies. He has broad experience in practice areas including licensing, patent, trademark, computer law, and copyright.
Brian counsels clients on technology innovation issues, patent infringement and validity opinions, licensing, due diligence matters, and contested matters, with the overall goal of helping his clients gain leverage in new and existing markets. He enjoys working with clients who trust him with their legal matters and with whom he can build a long-standing relationship.
Outside of the office, Brian played hockey on an old-timer league before he hurt his knee in a particularly competitive paintball game. He also enjoys running, reading, sailing, golfing, and downhill skiing.
