Though he has prosecuted hundreds of patent applications, John focuses much of his time on working with companies that own extensive patent portfolios. He likens patent portfolio analysis to finding gold nuggets and using them to strengthen his client's position in the marketplace. John enjoys developing long-term relationships with his clients that allow him to really get to know their businesses and to leverage patents to further their business goals.
John joined Merchant & Gould's Denver office in 1998, moving to the Knoxville office in 2008. He maintains a national client base, including a large amount of portfolio analysis work for Microsoft. John is experienced in all phases of patent prosecution, including counseling, patentability assessments, preparation and procurement of patents in the mechanical and medical fields, and reissue and reexamination of previously issued patents.
In addition to his emphasis on patent prosecution and portfolio analysis, John has experience with patent infringement and validity investigations and has participated in a number of significant patent infringement litigation matters from the perspective of both a plaintiff and a defendant. He has also counseled clients on a variety of other intellectual property matters, including trademark procurement, usage, and infringement.
In his spare time, John is a soccer dad who cheers his three children on at games. He also enjoys basketball, tennis, skiing and other outdoor activities.
