Our IP Practice: Electrical and Software practice

Electrical and Software

Our practice group brings the resources of a full-service intellectual property law firm to bear in ways that cater specifically to our clients' activities involving electronics, computer hardware and software, and other electrical and computer arts.

Members of this section have performed work for clients in areas not traditionally associated with electronics and computers, including financial, medical, and other services, as the use of the Internet and adoption of software specific to different industries has mushroomed.

Virtually all of the group's members have degrees specific to the electrical or computer arts, including some with advanced degrees. The group collectively brings decades of experience in advising clients on issues relating to patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks, and trade dress.

Members of the group have varied experience including: patent, copyright, and trademark prosecution and enforcement and litigation; infringement and validity opinions; licensing and other intellectual property-related agreements; due diligence; Internet issues; and development of business strategies relating to intellectual property.

The members of our group have demonstrated leadership in intellectual property law in a number of ways. Our attorneys are active in the American Intellectual Property Law Association and in many other state, national and international IP organizations. They have headed and currently chair a number of committees within these organizations. They have spoken at state, regional, and national business and law conferences about IP, high-tech, and strategic issues. Their articles have appeared in a variety of national IP and legal publications. These efforts are undertaken in large part out of a sense of duty and responsibility to the legal profession. The result is providing Merchant & Gould with a national reputation on the top tier of intellectual property law firms.

Our attorneys and staff engineers have extensive technical expertise. For example, we represent clients in the hardware, software, telecommunications, sensor, power systems, Internet, semiconductor, video, audio, medical, computer peripheral, and fabrication technology areas, and clients in all fields with respect to software systems and Internet applications.
