Merchant & Gould Opens Silicon Valley Office with Two Seasoned IP Partners

August 3, 2016

Merchant & Gould, a national intellectual property law firm based in Minneapolis, is pleased to announce the opening of its new California office and the hiring of a pair of seasoned intellectual property attorneys.

David C. Bohrer and Mansi H. Shah have joined Merchant & Gould as partners in the firm’s new office and bring significant IP and litigation experience to the practice.

“We are excited to welcome David and Mansi to our team and establish an office in Silicon Valley,” said Dan McDonald, a senior litigation partner at Merchant & Gould. “David and Mansi’s tested IP litigation and counseling experience with tech and Fortune 500 and 100 companies in California, coupled with Mansi’s background in computer science, provides a distinct advantage to Merchant & Gould’s trial practice on the West Coast.”

Since a majority of Merchant & Gould attorneys and patent agents have science and engineering backgrounds, the addition of these partners augments the firm's existing bench of professionals who have both deep technical knowledge and broad experience in IP law. The firm has focused exclusively on intellectual property for 116 years and represents major corporations, individual inventors, and established and emergent software and technology companies. With an office in Silicon Valley, Merchant & Gould is now able to offer boots-on-the-ground service to its clients in the area and a full team of attorneys with the skill sets to handle any IP venture.

The Merchant & Gould office in Silicon Valley offers a complete range of IP services, including litigation, patent and trademark prosecution, corporate IP portfolio analysis and management, copyright, trade secret, licensing, and IP due diligence.

David C. Bohrer focuses his litigation practice on patent, trade secret, copyright, and other IP matters in federal and state courts, arbitrations and mediations across the country, and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. A 30-year Silicon Valley IP trial lawyer, Bohrer was most recently a partner in the IP litigation department at Valorem Law Group, a disruptive law startup focused on offering fee arrangements that are better aligned with client economic interests. He previously was equity partner in the IP litigation departments of Morgan Lewis, Dechert and Oppenheimer (nka Fox Rothschild) in Silicon Valley. Bohrer has served as lead trial attorney in patent litigations for numerous publicly traded and high technology companies and has extensive experience developing and successfully managing multi-million dollar patent litigation budgets to match client economic objectives. Bohrer serves as the managing partner of Merchant & Gould’s new Silicon Valley office.

Bohrer received his J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law and his B.A. from Stanford University.

Mansi H. Shah has over a decade of experience in intellectual property strategy and complex litigation in a variety of technologies for both startups and large companies. A former partner at Valorem Law Group, Shah strategically manages patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation for her clients and achieves favorable results. She is also experienced in reviewing and negotiating IP license agreements and corporate IP portfolio management. With a background in software engineering and computer science, she has served as outside yet trusted “in-house” counsel for small companies, analyzing and advising on a spectrum of IP issues to facilitate growth. Previously, Shah was an attorney in the IP and litigation groups at Morgan Lewis in Chicago and Howrey in both Chicago and Irvine, California.

Shah received her J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and her B.S. in Computer Science from the University of California, San Diego.

“David and Mansi are veterans of the Silicon Valley legal community and have the dedication, experience and insight that our clients expect,” said Brian Batzli, Merchant & Gould’s CEO and Managing Director. “Their wealth of experience—combined with the talent and resources in our other offices across the country—allows us to offer value and a competitive edge to our clients in Silicon Valley.”
