Merchant & Gould is pleased to announce that senior litigation partner Daniel McDonald has officially assumed the role of 2016-2017 chair of the Board of Directors for the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.
Dan was elected chair earlier this year, received the ceremonial gavel from the outgoing chair at the Alumni Association’s Annual Celebration on April 15, and began his official term on July 1, 2016. He is the 80th chair in the Association’s 112-year history.
“It's an honor to serve as chair of the UMAA,” says Dan. “This year we are focused on building relationships with over 460,000 alumni all over the world. It is an ambitious goal but the UMAA has a great team and a great Board of Directors who are dedicated to success. I appreciate Merchant & Gould's consistent support of the U and my involvement with the College of Science and Engineering, the Law School, and the UMAA for many years.”
In private practice for over 30 years, Dan focuses his practice on patent litigation, trademark/trade dress litigation, copyright litigation, and trade secret litigation with an emphasis on electronics, software, and Internet issues. He has been active in professional associations in the legal field, has served on Merchant & Gould's Executive Committee multiple times, and has chaired the firm's litigation practice group. Last year, he led the legal teams that secured major litigation wins for two clients, was named Best Lawyer’s® “Lawyer of the Year 2015” for Patent Litigation in Minneapolis, and was chosen as an “Attorney of the Year 2015” by Minnesota Lawyer.
“Dan has always been a fantastic champion for the University of Minnesota,” stated Brian Batzli, CEO and Managing Director of Merchant and Gould. “We are very proud of Dan and the honor of being elected Chair of the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors. He is such an excellent litigator and leader at Merchant & Gould, and we know that he will do a wonderful job.”
Dan’s connection to the University of Minnesota is lengthy and broad. A 1982 Electrical Engineering graduate of the College of Science and Engineering, as well as a 1985 graduate of the Law School, Dan has remained closely connected to his alma mater since his days as a student. He has served on the Alumni Association Board of Directors for several years, most recently as chair-elect. He serves on the Advisory Board for the University of Minnesota Law School and chaired the Academic Engagement Committee. He is the past president of the University of Minnesota College of Science and Engineering Alumni Society and is the founder and past president of the Minnesota Alumni Chapter of Tau Beta Pi.
In a statement, Alumni Association President and CEO Lisa Lewis said, “I’m thrilled to welcome Dan as the chair of our Board of Directors. Dan’s passion for the University, his expertise and broad knowledge of the University and the Alumni Association will benefit the organization greatly as we engage with over 46,000 alumni, inspire students and strengthen the University community.”
