Firm Veteran, Former Managing Director and Chairman Retires After 36 Years


Merchant & Gould, an intellectual property law firm, today announced that after 36 years of service, D. Randall King is retiring, effective December 31, 2012. During King’s long tenure, the firm has seen continued growth and under his direction as managing director, regional offices opened in Knoxville, New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. From 1997 through 2011, Mr. King served as the firm’s CEO, managing director and chairman.

“For more than 36 years, Randy has been an integral part of Merchant & Gould as a litigator and counselor, a leader, a mentor and a friend,” said CEO and Managing Director Brian H. Batzli. “Randy has always been a man of endless energy, and he leaves behind an inspiring and valuable legacy across our offices around the country.  We wish him congratulations and much happiness in his retirement!”

Randy joined Merchant & Gould in 1976. Prior to joining the firm, he served for three years as in-house trademark counsel for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. He has over twenty years of experience representing clients’ interests in litigation. His cases have involved trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair competition, false advertising and other intellectual property issues. In addition to trial practice, he has extensively counseled clients in the selection and availability of trademarks for many different businesses and industries. His cases have also involved the policing of trademarks and trademark infringement issues.
