Merchant & Gould is pleased to announce that partner Rachel Clark Hughey has been chosen as a "40 Under 40" winner for 2016 by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal.
This award, given each year to 40 individuals in the Twin Cities area under the age of 40, recognizes young business and community leaders for their professional accomplishments, demonstrated leadership, and community contributions. This year, the Business Journal received nominations for over 475 young professionals who work in the metro.
As a patent litigator and shareholder at Merchant & Gould, Rachel has accumulated an impressive list of accomplishments, including becoming one of the leading authorities on Federal Circuit appellate practice in the Twin Cities. The past year was a productive one for the Federal Circuit law clerk, as she secured a significant Federal Circuit victory for a Minnesota company and, as a volunteer attorney for the Advocates for Human Rights, successfully obtained legal status for an asylum seeker after obtaining a remand from the Eighth Circuit. Additionally in 2015, she co-founded the first intellectual property Inn of Court in Minnesota, helped the University of Minnesota Law Review celebrate its 100th Volume as the President of the Alumni Advisory Board, and provided over 100 hours of pro bono service to low-income legal clients.
“Rachel’s skill as a patent litigator and proven appellate experience make her a great part of the Merchant & Gould team,” said Brian H. Batzli, Managing Director and CEO of Merchant & Gould. “With her strategic approach and well-honed Federal Circuit experience, Rachel excels in helping her clients achieve their goals. Rachel is also dedicated to pro bono service, the legal community, and other volunteer positions in the Twin Cities. This is a wonderful and deserved honor for Rachel.”
Rachel chairs the firm’s Strategic Planning Committee, co-chairs the firm’s Appellate Practice, and chairs the firm’s Pro Bono Committee. She has appeared in dozens of Federal Circuit appeals, consults on appellate cases throughout the firm and for other firms, and speaks and writes regularly on appellate and other legal matters. In the community, she is active on a number of boards, including the Volunteer Lawyers Network and the University of Minnesota Law School Dean’s Advisory Counsel, and volunteers for several non-profit organizations.
The 2016 40 Under 40 award ceremony will take place on March 10, 2016 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at A’BULAE in downtown St. Paul.
