Andrew practices intellectual property law with a focus on patents. His primary focus is on technology areas related to computer software and hardware, telecommunications, medical devices, mechanical inventions, and financial services.

Andrew’s patent prosecution experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the United States, drafting appeal briefs, managing the prosecution of international patent portfolios, and participating in administrative patent challenges proceedings. In addition to his patent prosecution expertise, Andrew has extensive experience in preparing both infringement and non-infringement opinions as well as validity and invalidity opinions for his clients. Andrew’s technical areas of specialty lie in the software and electrical technology space including: operating systems (Windows, Linux, Chrome OS, Android, iOS), graphics processing, encryption, compression, networking, real-time streaming, databases, conditional access systems, smart cards, distributed computing, antivirus and anti-malware, location based technology, and SaaS applications. Additionally, Andrew also has experience working with various standards including H.263, H.264/MPEG-4, VP8, and DVB. In addition to his extensive software experience, Andrew has significant experience in the field of healthcare technology, including auditory prostheses, bone plates and bone screws, remote diagnostic technologies, and medical imaging.

Andrew understands the business value of patents. He uses his years of experience to counsel clients on when to file and when not to file patent applications. Andrew has partnered with in-house counsel on various occasions to set up patent programs and develop patent filing strategies that are tailored to their company’s specific needs. He also helps clients identify areas in their patent portfolios that can be strengthened while finding new ways to monetize their existing IP.

Andrew is a member of the Silicon Flatirons Advisory Board and also serves on Merchant & Gould’s technology committee. In his spare time, he enjoys travelling, playing soccer, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.
