Ina Quinn is a Patent Attorney with Merchant & Gould and focuses her practice on patent preparation and prosecution, as well as client counseling. With prior experience as in-house counsel and also as a patent Examiner with the USPTO, Ina’s background enables her to advise clients with insights from multiple perspectives.

A Diverse Career & Prior USPTO Experience

In her early legal career as a Patent Examiner for the U.S Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), Ina gained expertise in technologies ranging from polymer-based and inorganic refractory compositions for coatings industry, electrochemical cells manufacturing, semiconductors processing, additive manufacturing (3D-printing), fiber optic processing, and deposition methods (plasma, laser, vapor, chemical deposition technologies and related equipment).

Following this role, Ina also worked as in-house counsel and in law firm environments, where she counseled clients in oil & gas, petrochemicals, medical/pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Appraising IP Issues From All Angles

Ina’s prior experience as both an in-house counsel and Patent Examiner enables her to analyze IP issues from a variety of angles. By understanding a client’s business goals and knowing which strategies are most successful in patent prosecution with the USPTO, she is able to effectively navigate the process for her clients.

As a result, she avoids stagnant legal strategies which can be costly and do not always yield results, while helping her clients reach the desired outcome in a more efficient manner.

A Forward-Thinking Legal Counselor

Ina understands that patents are critical business tools that her clients use to reach their goals and become competitive in their industries. That’s why she enjoys counseling her clients on which strategies will best protect their IP now and in the future. She routinely counsels clients from the inception of an inventive concept, through the drafting and preparation of a patent application, followed by navigating the complex prosecution process with the USPTO and foreign patent offices.

Ina also provides legal opinions with respect to validity, invalidity, freedom to operate, and patent landscape assessments. Through her counsel, Ina’s clients receive clear advice on whether to move forward with a product or whether to consider creative solutions to avoid potential infringement risks. Ina prioritizes building relationships with her clients, ensuring communication is always open, timely and effective. This results in increased efficiency for busy inventors and companies.

Ina graduated cum laude, with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering degree from the University of Florida, followed by a Juris Doctorate from Michigan State University, where she was an editor for the Journal of Medicine and Intellectual Property.

In her spare time, Ina enjoys spending time with her husband and two young kids, cooking, BBQ-ing and going to the beach. She also enjoys tackling DIY home renovation projects with her family and upgrading their new home.
