Jun Ma is an associate for Merchant & Gould’s Minneapolis office. Focusing his work on patent prosecution, Jun uses his technical experience to help inventors protect their intellectual property.

Scientist & Inventor With Technical Expertise

Jun’s efforts involve evaluating a client’s technology so he can find the best solutions to protect their assets. With a Ph.D. in Organic and Polymer Chemistry from Washington University and an extensive R&D background as a scientist and product developer, he understands the technical needs of any product and how they relate to a strong patent.

Throughout his R&D career, Jun has authored 17 peer-reviewed research articles and procured 15 original-filed patent applications that include a wide range of products and materials. His technical expertise includes:

  • Industrial chemical
  • Polymers science and engineering
  • Front end bio and nano-technology
  • Engineered polymeric film
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesive and tape
  • Easy-to-clean coating and technology
  • Radiation curing processes
  • Vapor deposition and vacuum processes
  • Batch and continuous manufacturing processes
  • Bio-conjugation and imaging agents
  • Battery, power source, and electrochemistry

Jun has seen just how new technology drives business growth. As a product development specialist with 3M Company, he developed new materials and processes for innovative consumer products. Yet as a scientist for a world-leading biotech company prior to 3M, Jun supported the innovation and commercialization of novel nanocrystal imaging agents. From the birth of an invention to final production, he has experienced it all.

Passionate About the Details of Technology & Innovation

Jun knows that the details of an invention are what sets a client’s product apart from the competition. To best serve his clients, he dives deep into each invention to understand these details before moving forward. He analyzes their innovation, creating patent applications that will protect it indefinitely.

In the near future, he hopes to support his clients with both legal and business counseling, using his technical expertise to create legal strategies that not only protect but defend their precious intellectual property and business value.
