Loretta L. Freeman is an IP attorney with Merchant & Gould’s Atlanta, Georgia, office. Loretta’s practice includes preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the mechanical arts, design patents, as well as trademark applications, trade dress, due diligence and copyright law.

Dedicated Attorney With Years of Experience in Engineering & Law

Loretta brings over 10 years of experience in law and 11 years of experience in engineering to the table. As an engineer for 3M, she worked hand-in-hand with inventors drafting patent applications that covered every aspect of their inventions. And now, as a successful attorney, she partners with businesses and inventors to protect their IP on a global scale.

Loretta offers her legal support to clients throughout the mechanical arts space and in industries such as telecommunications, hydraulics, aerospace fields and manufacturing. She also helps businesses with design-heavy legal needs, such as those in retail, protect the appearance and aesthetics of their products.

Her success in mechanical arts and design has led her to become a co-chair of the Design Patent & Trade Dress group within Merchant & Gould.

In addition to her leadership roles, Loretta is an award-winning attorney, earning a spot within The National Black Lawyers Top 100 every year since 2015, as well as the Top 40 Under 40 from 2015 to 2019. She’s also a new member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Legal Partner for Your Business

With her breadth of knowledge in engineering and the law, Loretta is your legal partner. She digs deep, getting to the root of your business, what’s important to you and how your products fit into the global marketplace. With the big picture in mind, she’s able to carefully develop legal strategies that fit your unique needs.

Loretta helps support you by leaving the legal jargon behind and explaining what you can expect from a cost perspective. She communicates and ensures you understand how the process works and which steps you’ll need to take to reach your goals.

Loretta also provides counseling in intellectual property matters relating to product development and marketing, including freedom to operate, state of the art, non-infringement, and invalidity analysis and opinions.

The value Loretta brings to your business—personalized legal protection that fits your business strategy—is invaluable.

Volunteer for the Wider Community

Loretta currently volunteers as a board member for the Boys & Girls Club of Metro Atlanta, helping to serve kids in her community. She also volunteers with LegalCORPS Inventor Assistance Program (IAP) assisting inventors in obtaining a patent.
