Roderick is a patent and trademark attorney with Merchant & Gould’s Denver office. Handling a mix of prosecution and litigation, Roderick has the balanced insight needed to address your intellectual property needs as they arise. Prior to practicing as an attorney, Roderick worked as a registered Patent Agent and a software engineer prior to that. He now focuses his efforts on handling patent and trademark work for a variety of software and IT companies, as well as businesses in the cannabis space.

Strategically Managing Software & IT Company Patents

For Roderick, a strong strategy involving a patent comes long before the application process. Indeed, it begins with the birth of the invention. Right from the outset, it’s important for your software or IT company to consider these questions:

  • Does it make economic sense for you to pursue a patent in the first place?
  • Do you see yourself asserting your patent? Against whom?
  • Is the timing right? Are you too late to market?

Once you’re assured that your financials pan out and that there is a strong business case for pursuing your patent, Roderick will dedicate himself to getting all the right items in place to get your application moving forward.

At all times, Roderick will keep an eye to your overarching patent strategy and how that fits with your business objectives. He’ll perform full patent portfolio valuations for you, assessing potential infringements, individual patent values and more, all to ensure your best foot is forward always.

Inventor to Inventor, Business Owner to Business Owner

An entrepreneur in his own right, Roderick understands the complexities involved in developing and running a business. He also knows first-hand the concerns that arise when you’re thinking about protecting what you’ve created. He has taken the steps you may need right now, from IP due diligence to GDPR compliance and data privacy to so much more.

When you want an intellectual property attorney who truly gets where you’re coming from and knows what you need, look no further than Roderick.

A Colorado Native Born to Fly

Like most native Coloradans, Roderick enjoys all things outdoors. But for him, there’s nothing better than combining his passion for the outdoors with his love of flying. A member of the Lawyer Pilot’s Bar Association, Roderick has his pilot’s license and instrument rating. When he’s not flying, you’ll find Roderick enjoying time with his wife. He also enjoys the study of languages and is conversationally fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
