Zach Kachmer is an intellectual property attorney with Merchant & Gould’s Denver, Colorado, office. Zach focuses his practice on strategic patent prosecution and IP litigation, assisting companies in reaching their business goals while protecting their critical assets. With a background in engineering, Zach understands how innovation requires investment and how the legal system can protect that investment.

Patent Prosecution & IP Litigation for Business

Zach serves businesses of all sizes in a wide range of industries from technology to biochemistry and beyond. Each business in every industry experiences its own unique legal concerns and hurdles to overcome. Zach understands that legal counseling requires creativity and problem-solving skills, and he uses his knowledge of business law and intellectual property to tailor solutions to fit each individual business, instead of using a one-size-fits-all model.

Bringing a Background in Engineering to the Table

Zach received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from Brown University, prior to obtaining his J.D from the University of Colorado. This background allows him to connect and communicate with engineers in high-tech fields, understanding their unique patent needs.

“Studying engineering helped me understand the world around me and the way things work. Studying law helped me understand how to write clearly and persuasively. Together, these skills give me the tools to successfully write and prosecute patents.”

Legal Advice With a Big-Picture Approach

Zach serves his clients by taking a big-picture approach, helping them define their biggest business goals first. Working from there, Zach strategizes solutions to best achieve those goals through filings, counseling, litigation, and more.

As a dedicated partner in his clients’ success, Zach aims to always be the go-to support in a company’s corner. His goal is to be in the room, an active member of strategic conversations, bringing his unique combination of knowledge and skills with him.

When he’s not advocating on a company’s behalf, Zach spends his time trying to learn new things, like cooking or playing music. He also enjoys spending time outdoors, cycling and hiking around Colorado.
