Merchant &amp; Gould is proud to announce that partner Rachel C. Hughey has been honored by the Hennepin County Bar Association, the largest of Minnesota’s local bar associations, receiving its 2020 HCBA Excellence Award. &nbsp;The awards honor members for their service to the local legal profession, the community and the association.&nbsp; The HCBA selected eight members for their work from among six different categories.&nbsp; Rachel’s award was in the “Mentoring in the Profession” category. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rachel’s mentoring efforts are significant and extensive.&nbsp; She mentors attorneys both internally at Merchant &amp; Gould, as well as externally through her extensive board service, bar association activities and pro bono efforts.&nbsp; As one example, in 2017, Rachel mentored a team of associate attorneys in a pro bono case who successfully obtained asylum for a client. Rachel ensured that each associate had the opportunity to have significant courtroom experience at the merits hearing. This case led to Rachel and the team being named “2018 Attorney of the Year – Group” by <em>Minnesota Lawyer,</em> as well as being honored as Merchant &amp; Gould’s 2018 Pro Bono Attorneys of the Year.&nbsp;

When she was recently profiled in the “2018 Women in the Law” issue of <em>Minnesota Lawyer</em>, she talked about the importance of mentoring to her.&nbsp; The article concluded, “As a mentor in the law, [Rachel] often gives this advice: ‘I coach people to be happy and find a practice and a firm that fits. Doing that has made me a better lawyer, mentor and friend.’”

Rachel is a trial attorney who specializes in intellectual property law. She has a technical background in chemical engineering and has experience in a wide variety of fields, including chemical technologies, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, mechanical devices and software. Rachel has held a variety of leadership positions at Merchant &amp; Gould, including Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, Chair of the Pro Bono Committee, and Co-Chair of the Appellate Practice Group.&nbsp;
