Matthew Metcalfe is a registered patent attorney at Merchant, based in Austin, Texas. Matthew maintains a strong presence in both Texas and Colorado and represents clients across the United States as part of Merchant’s national intellectual property practice.

Matthew’s practice focuses on patent preparation and prosecution, with an emphasis on developing patent strategies that align with clients’ business objectives. He works closely with clients of all sizes to understand both the technical and commercial aspects of their innovations and to secure patent protection that supports competitive positioning and future development.

Drawing on his background in electrical engineering, Matthew drafts and prosecutes domestic and foreign patent applications across a broad range of technologies, including electronics, semiconductors, power and energy systems, software, telecommunications, and artificial intelligence. He collaborates closely with inventors to capture the full scope of their innovations and obtain meaningful, commercially relevant patent protection.

In addition to patent prosecution, Matthew has experience drafting opinion letters regarding patentability, patent infringement, and freedom to operate, providing litigation support, and conducting technical reviews of intellectual property for due diligence matters.

When Matthew isn't practicing patent law, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids, taking his dogs for walks, snowboarding, and watching football—go Longhorns!
