Isaac Thomsen is an associate in the firm’s Minneapolis office, where he draws on experience in both patent law and medical device engineering to help clients protect technical innovations. His background gives him firsthand insight into the product development process and the regulatory and business considerations that often shape intellectual property strategy.
Before beginning his legal career, Isaac worked as a design assurance engineer for a medical device company, collaborating with engineering and R&D teams on product changes, risk assessments, design verification, and compliance with U.S. and European regulatory requirements. He later supported the company’s in-house patent counsel, assisting with patent documentation, office action responses, and patentability analyses.
Isaac has also developed hands-on patent drafting experience through the USPTO Patent Drafting Competition, where he advanced as a regional finalist after conducting patent searches, preparing a full patent application, and presenting and defending the team’s drafting strategy. His technical background in biology, combined with his engineering and patent experience, allows him to approach complex technologies with an analytical and practical perspective.
